Opal Audio Announces Penumbra

Engineering Preview at Montreal Audiofest 2026

Princess Pasta Audio will present an engineering preview of the upcoming Opal Audio Penumbra headphone at Montreal Audiofest 2026, taking place March 20–22 at the Hotel Bonaventure in Montréal, Canada.

The unit being demonstrated is a preproduction development prototype assembled for engineering evaluation and public listening feedback. Penumbra remains an active research and development program, and final specifications, materials, and tuning will continue to evolve as the design progresses.

An Experimental Acoustic Design

Penumbra continues Opal Audio’s exploration of enclosure geometry, driver loading, and acoustic damping, with the goal of improving spatial stability, midrange clarity, and low-frequency control through careful management of the acoustic environment surrounding the driver.

One of the most visually distinctive elements of the prototype is the external Acoustic Occlusion device mounted on the ear cup. Rather than serving a cosmetic role, this composite structure functions as a controlled acoustic impedance element, moderating airflow and pressure within the enclosure. By regulating how the rear of the driver interacts with the internal cavity and the external environment, the system is intended to reduce resonant artifacts and stabilize the relationship between driver motion and cavity pressure.

Preproduction Demonstration Unit

The Penumbra headphone being shown at Audiofest is a development prototype, and several aspects of the design remain under refinement. Materials, enclosure geometry, and acoustic tuning may change before production as the engineering process continues.

Hear Penumbra at Montreal Audiofest

Visitors attending Montreal Audiofest 2026 will have the opportunity to listen to the Penumbra prototype and speak with the team about the design and development process.

Additional technical details and production information will be released as the program advances.

About Opal Audio

Opal Audio is a Canadian headphone brand focused on research-driven acoustic design and small-batch manufacturing.

The brand was first introduced with the AM7, an open-back dynamic headphone whose development began in 2020 and reached production in 2025 following a successful crowdfunding launch. Built in Ontario using materials such as stabilized Ambrosia Maple, aluminum, brass, and leather, the AM7 established Opal Audio’s design philosophy of combining experimental acoustic architecture with handcrafted construction.

Since the introduction of the AM7, Opal Audio has continued exploring new approaches to driver integration, enclosure geometry, and resonance management, with an emphasis on spatial coherence, natural tonal balance, and long-term listening comfort.

Penumbra represents the next stage in this ongoing development as the Opal Audio lineup continues to evolve.
